A jackpot "goes" when at least one ticket wins division 1. If nobody does, it rolls over and gets bigger. Bigger jackpots pull in more players, and that makes them more likely to be won. The ones most likely to go are first.

"Paid back per game" is what one game returns on average, counting every prize division. Most games still win nothing at all. Your prices stay in this browser.
First we estimate how many games get sold at a jackpot that size, using past draws (bigger jackpots sell more). Multiply that by the odds and you get the number of division 1 winners to expect. The chance at least one game wins is 1 − e−expected winners. Expected division 1 winners this time: Saturday Lotto 5.27, Oz Lotto 0.54, Powerball 0.19, Weekday Lotto 0.74, Set for Life 0.05. How that has held up in past draws: Saturday Lotto predicted 100% won, 99% actually won (1,550 draws); Oz Lotto predicted 26% won, 24% actually won (1,096 draws); Powerball predicted 29% won, 30% actually won (1,587 draws); Weekday Lotto predicted 55% won, 50% actually won (3,131 draws); Set for Life predicted 4% won, 4% actually won (4,088 draws). Syndicates and System entries mean winners turn up in clumps, so for games that get won often, the real chance can be a few points lower. There's more on what a game is worth on Ticket value.

Prize totals are national (winners × prize each) and only count draws where prize data exists. Set for Life's division 1 counts its monthly payments at face value. "Biggest" means the most one winning entry got, not the whole pool.

Based on 707 draws (May 2011 – Oct 2026) where every state's winners were recorded.
We only use draws where the state counts add up to the national total. Older draws have gaps in the state breakdown, and leaving them out beats undercounting some states. Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT share one lottery operator, so those three are counted together. "Per million people" uses rough current populations (ABS, 2024). Mostly it shows how much each state plays. Luck has little to do with it.
| State | Sales share | Expected div 1 | Actual div 1 | Compared with sales |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NSW | 32.0% | 74 | 84 | 84 won · 74 expected · 32.0% of sales |
| VIC, TAS & ACT | 26.6% | 62 | 58 | 58 won · 62 expected · 26.6% of sales |
| QLD | 21.2% | 49 | 36 | 36 won · 49 expected · 21.2% of sales |
| WA | 12.9% | 30 | 32 | 32 won · 30 expected · 12.9% of sales |
| SA | 5.3% | 12 | 16 | 16 won · 12 expected · 5.3% of sales |
| NT | 2.0% | 5 | 6 | 6 won · 5 expected · 2.0% of sales |
We work out each state's share of ticket sales from its share of winners in the lower divisions. There are millions of those, so the share is precise. Expected division 1 winners is that share × the game's division 1 winners, added up across games. A bar only gets coloured when the gap is more than 2 standard deviations. The p-value comes from a chi-square test across all states (232 division 1 winners). Small states like the NT swing about a lot because they have so few winners.
