What it costs to live in your area

Type your suburb, postcode or council. You'll see the rent people really pay there, what power and fuel cost, how much is lost on poker machines, and how much crime police record. Every number is set against the rest of your state, so you can see if your area is higher or lower.

Find your area

For now we cover New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia.

Thinking of moving?

Put two council areas side by side: rent, power, fuel, pokies losses and recorded crime, each set against its own state.

Compare two areas

Or check if a cheaper rent further out is worth the longer drive, with rent and fuel added up for two suburbs.

Rent against the drive

What you'll see

Rent. The median weekly rent on new leases, from bond records. Victoria doesn't publish this by council yet.
Electricity. The default offer in your network area, the most a standing offer can cost, and what a typical plan costs.
Fuel. The average price of unleaded at stations in the area over the last year, in NSW and Queensland.
Pokies losses. What people lost on poker machines in a year, for every adult who lives there.
Recorded crime. Crimes against people and property crime that police recorded, for every 100,000 people.

We don't rank councils against each other. Each one is only set against its own state's average, because a single number can't tell you what a place is really like.
