Which bookmaker keeps the most?

Every bookmaker builds a cut, called a margin, into its prices. That's why every bet loses on average. String a few legs together in a multi and the cut multiplies. Read How betting apps get you to bet more.

Bookmaker margins on upcoming matches

BookmakerTypical marginMatches
Betfair exchange 1.9% 80
Sportsbet 5.1% 89
PointsBet 5.1% 69
Betr 5.3% 99
Neds 5.5% 76
Ladbrokes 5.5% 76
TAB 5.7% 81
Unibet 5.8% 103
BetRight 5.8% 61
PlayUp 6.7% 55
TABtouch 6.8% 78
picklebet_au 8.3% 64

This is each bookmaker's middle (median) head-to-head margin across its upcoming matches. A 5% margin means you'd get back about 95¢ of every $1 you bet, on average. Betfair works differently. It's an exchange where people bet against each other, and it charges commission on winnings instead. That commission isn't counted here.

Multis: where the margin multiplies

A multi pays every leg's price multiplied together. So the bookie's cut gets multiplied too, once for every leg.

Ever lost a multi on the last leg? That's a near miss. The more legs you add, the more often it happens.

A single bet
5.4%
of every dollar the bookie keeps, on average
2-leg multi
11%
of every dollar the bookie keeps, on average
4-leg multi
20%
of every dollar the bookie keeps, on average
8-leg multi
36%
of every dollar the bookie keeps, on average

Say you put $10 a week on 4-leg multis. At a typical bookmaker's prices you'd expect to lose about $104 a year. The same $10 a week on single bets loses about $28. See what that money could grow to instead.

How much of your stake each bookmaker keeps on average, if every leg carries its typical head-to-head margin from the table above. Same-game multis and exotic legs usually have bigger margins, so the real cut is often higher than this. Betfair isn't shown because it charges commission instead.

How often do favourites win?

Favourites won 10 of 21 matches (48%).

If the market's chances are right, "happened" should land close to "expected" in every row. Each possible result of every match counts once, so a match that could end in a draw adds three.
