Rents

Is my rent fair?

Wondering if you're paying too much? Look up your suburb, postcode or council, then put your weekly rent into the check on its page. You'll see how it stacks up against what new tenants pay for the same kind of home.

    How it works

Every figure comes from the rental bonds tenants lodge with state governments when a lease starts. New South Wales and Tasmania publish every bond, so there the check lines your rent up against every new lease for the same kind of home over the past year. Queensland and South Australia publish medians, so there it compares your rent with the state's median for the latest quarter.

New leases show what new tenants agree to pay. If you've been in the same place for a while, you're likely paying less than they are. The check doesn't work in Victoria, Western Australia, the ACT or the Northern Territory, because they don't publish current bond figures.
