About the rent figures

The rent on a listing is only what a landlord hopes to get. These pages show what tenants in Australia actually pay. You'll find the median weekly rent of new leases for every postcode, suburb, council and state, quarter by quarter.

When a lease starts, the tenant's bond is lodged with the state government, along with the rent they agreed to. New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania publish those records as open data. So every figure here is a rent somebody signed up to pay.

Each figure tells you the quarter it covers and who published it. Some states publish nothing. Some places have too few new leases for a median you could trust. When that happens, the page tells you. We don't fill the gap with a guess.

The rent pages are free. We're independent of the governments and agencies whose data we use. Their licences allow this use, and none of them endorses it.
